S21 Ep128: The Devil That Walked New York: One Cop's Pursuit for the Truth Behind Son of Sam and the Disappearance of Etan Patz w/Mike Codell

True Crime Tuesday Presents: The Devil That Walked New York: One Cop's Pursuit for the Truth Behind Son of Sam and the Disappearance of Etan Patz w/former DEA agent/ Former NYPD District Sargeant/ Author, Mike Codell!

In August 1977, New York City’s nightmare finally seemed to end with the arrest of its most infamous serial killer, David Berkowitz. The city exhaled— briefly. On May 25, 1979, a young boy vanished into the shadows of Soho, never to be seen again. The vibrant, chaotic neighborhood of struggling artists, working-class families, and small shopkeepers would be forever haunted. These two crimes— high-profile, infamous, and seemingly unconnected— were just the surface. Decades later, New York City Police Sergeant Mike Codella found himself entangled in one of the darkest investigations the city had ever seen. What he uncovered would shatter the boundaries of belief: satanic cults lurking in the shadows, ruthless 1% biker gangs, a Nobel Prize-winning pedophile doctor, and horrifying acts of human sacrifice— all hidden beneath the city’s glittering façade. Against the suffocating weight of departmental politics and institutional cover-ups, Codella’ s relentless pursuit brings the reader face-to-face with a world where evil wears many masks— and nothing is what it seems. This is more than true crime. It is a descent into a nightmare so real, so horrifying, that it will make you question every conspiracy you thought too wild to exist.

On today's show, we sit down with Mike and talk to him about his service with the DEA, that fateful day of 9/11/2001, and how Mike barely survived; how he shifted over from the DEA to the NYPD's Missing Persons Unit, and his promotion to District Sergeant. We also travel down the rabbit hole of how he got to the missing persons case of Etan Patz and his eventual meeting with David Berkowitz AKA The Son of Sam!
